Who is suitable for Invisalign Luton?

Here at Vogue Dental Care, we give our patients advice and treatment that helps them to have good oral health as well as a smile that gives them confidence.  One treatment that has proven popular is Invisalign Luton.  As a means of correcting misaligned teeth, it is highly effective and comes with a range of benefits.  Here, we explain what Invisalign Luton is and explore the kind of patient that is best suited to the treatment.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign Luton is the modern means of straightening the teeth.  It can be used to alter the position of teeth that are crooked, protruding or overcrowded very effectively.  When people think of braces, they usually imagine the traditional type that involves metal wires that run across the front of the teeth, and which are secured by brackets.

Invisalign is completely different, in that it takes the form of trays of plastic that are completely transparent, and which are worn over the teeth.  These trays, known as aligners, are custom made for each patient to give the perfect fit and for the purposes of delivering targeted pressure to the teeth.  This pressure is barely detectable but gently helps to move the teeth into the optimum position over time, usually a period of several months.

Good oral health

Before commencing treatment with invisible braces, it is important that the patient has healthy teeth and gums.  This means that the teeth should be in good condition and the gums should be free of any inflammation.  If this is not the case, for example, the patient has some signs of gum disease, then this does not necessarily mean that they cannot get clear braces.  We can usually treat the issue and ensure good oral health before moving on to treatment with Invisalign.

Smoking is detrimental to oral health in general, as it reduces the blood flow to the gums and can cause the teeth to become stained and yellow.  If an Invisalign patient smokes during treatment, they may compromise their oral health and the condition of the braces.  One of the greatest advantages of this treatment is that the braces are invisible.  However, nicotine from cigarettes can stain the braces which means that they may become visible to others.

Ideally, the patient who is embarking on treatment with clear aligners should stop smoking completely before they start.  However, if this is not possible, then limiting smoking to mealtimes when the aligners have been removed is the next best option.  This will protect the clear nature of the braces and reduce the risks of damage caused by smoking.

Person with self-discipline

Because these braces can be removed, there is an element of self-discipline required when getting the teeth straightened with Invisalign.  It is important that the aligners are worn most of the time, that is around 22 out of every 24 hours.  If this is not done, then the patient may not get the best possible results from the treatment.  To get a truly great smile, commitment and discipline go a long way.
